Solar Thermal
Hot water heating accounts for about 25% of domestic energy use. In the Welsh climate solar energy can be used to heat water for about 8 months of the year. More...
Hydrogen
The hydrogen fuel cell was invented by Sir William Robert Grove of Swansea in 1839.
What makes up a Carbon Footprint?
This is perhaps the most obvious contribution to our carbon footprint. When fossil fuels are burnt they produce CO2 which has been locked away for millions of years is released. It is the rapid increase in our fossil fuel use that has caused global warming.More....
Wood
Wood can provide a carbon neutral source of heat and power. More...
Biofuels for heat and electricity.
Pellets and chips, biofuels for heat and electricity .
Wood pellets are made from sawdust, elephant grass, bracken and other wood waste products. They have low moisture content and can be burned very efficiently producing very little smoke. They are very easily handled by automated machinery and provided a clean, convenient way of burning wood. Combined heat and power units burn pellets or chips to produce electricity as well as heat.
Ysgol Preseli, a secondary school in Pembrokeshire, replaced its oil heating system with wood pellet boilers making a significant reduction in the schools carbon footprint.
Wood chips are made from forestry waste or from short rotation coppiced wood. The machinery required to handle them for auto feed is more industrial than for wood pellets. They have higher moisture content than wood pellets and so do not burn as efficiently. They much cheaper to produce and the machinery could be installed within local communities reducing transport costs and emissions.
